A Day in a Traditional Craft Village
Last Sunday, Minh visited a famous pottery village near his hometown. The village is about twenty kilometres
from the city centre and is well known for its beautiful ceramic products. Along the narrow streets, there are
many small workshops and family-run stores. Tourists can watch the craftsmen at work, take photos and buy
colourful vases, cups and statues as souvenirs.
Minh’s uncle has a workshop there. When Minh arrived, his uncle was shaping a large pot on the potter’s wheel
while his aunt was carefully painting flowers on a vase. Minh was surprised to see that most of the work was
still done by hand. His uncle told him that many families in the village had made pottery for generations and
they were very proud of their craft. Some young people were learning new designs so that the products would be
more attractive to modern customers.
The craft village brings jobs and income to the local people. However, it also faces some difficulties. The
air can be polluted by the smoke from the kilns, and cheap factory-made products are becoming more popular.
Villagers are trying to solve these problems by using cleaner fuel and improving the quality of their pottery.
At the end of the day, Minh felt proud of the traditional craft and promised to tell his friends to visit the
village.
